Biographical / Historical

Medical programs have been in the curriculum at Oakland Community College from its opening in 1965. Dental Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Office Assisting, and two year Nursing Associates Degrees were all offered under what was called the "Paramedical Career Programs". In 1967 as the demand for nurses increased, OCC expanded the nursing program by 60%. That same year OCC was requested to assume responsibility for... the Practical Nursing Program operating out of Pontiac. The Practical Nursing Program had been conducted by the Pontiac School District using funds from the Manpower Development and Training Act of 1962. To continue the program, the Pontiac Board of Education realized the need for funds outside of the MDTA thus striking an agreement with OCC for its transfer. OCC's new Licensed Practical Nurse program joined the curriculum later that year followed by a Refresher Nurse Program in 1970. See more
